Introducing Missouri Medical Patients to the CBG and CBN cannabinoids

By: Dustin Alexander
Kansas City Cannabis, Blue Springs Budtender

For new and experienced users alike, edible products are a sensational option for your medical needs. After flower, edibles are by far the second most talked about product in our dispensary with our patients on a daily basis. Edibles delivered a measured dose discreetly, allowing the patient to truly dose theirself to their desired levels. With the potential for edibles to benefit most medical patients, it is important to understand all of the different options available at your local dispensary. Our edible selection at Kansas City Cannabis always features a broad selection of brands, different strengths, cannabinoids and flavors. Within the past two months or so, we have seen an increase in products containing CBN and CBG, two different cannabinoids that brands are using to their advantage in their Missouri grown edibles. Let’s take a look at what this means for you!

CBN, or cannabinol, is a cannabinoid being introduced to Missouri patients across the state as we speak. Cannabinol is a non-intoxicating compound, meaning the patient can still dose their typical amounts of THC while enjoying the benefits CBN has to offer. THC is converted into CBN over time due to poor storage or simply age. A visual example I like to share with my patients is stating if you left a joint in your closet for some years, then smoked it, a lot of the THC once present will then be converted into CBN. The listed potential benefits of CBN include antibacterial and neuroprotectant properties, anti-inflammatory and even appetite stimulation. While sleep is not listed here, this compound is widely being used in products that are geared towards helping patients achieve a quality night of sleep. While sedation is not a listed benefit, it is believed that strains high in CBN are also naturally high in sedative cannabis terpenes. This combination of THC, CBN and natural sedative terpenes create a lovely entourage effect, leaving the user feeling sleepy and ready for a night of rest.

If this is something you might benefit from, I recommend turning to the always reliable Proper Cannabis. Proper utilizes CBN in their Good Night sleep line, featuring a 1:1:1 ratio gummies and also disposable cartridges. I recommend these products to anyone struggling with insomnia or anxiety towards night time, and they currently retail at $30 for the 100 mg package of Dreamberry gummies, and $50 for the All-In-One Vaporizer!

Along with CBN, there has been another cannabinoid gaining traction in the dispensary lately. Cannabigerol, or CBG, is a non-psychoactive minor cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. While CBG is still a relatively new cannabinoid in terms of medical use, the known benefits of CBG make it something worth trying in your daily routine. CBG is often referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids” as the cannabinoids we all know and love (THC & CBD), both originate from cannabigerol. CBG is known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and even acts as a hunger stimulant, perfect for those suffering from eating disorders or other food related issues. There is even some evidence available to show CBG could help maintain bone and tissue integrity throughout the body. Also worth mentioning, we know CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, much like CBD. This means patients can add CBD or CBG to their daily routine, without worrying about over medicating due to adding a new compound to their body. Cannabigerol is actually a CB1 antagonist, meaning CBG will actually help limit the high a patient feels from the THC they consumed. Due to all the reported benefits, I definitely recommend checking out a product containing CBG, the wide range of benefits make it an appealing option for most Missouri medical patients.

With the rapid expansion of Missouri’s medical market, patients have more products available to them than ever before. Whether you are suffering from insomnia, anxiety issues or simply want to trigger the munchies, CBG or CBN might be worth checking out! As always, medicate responsibly and be sure to come check out me and my friends at Kansas City Cannabis.

SHALEE ollez

Many patients that have been to KCC have surely been greeted by the infectious smile and vibe of Shalee Stout. Shalee is the Assistant Manager at our Kearney location and is a one-in-a-million cannabis professional who has been with the KCC team for just over a year. Her passion for cannabis and helping patients is obvious through every interaction she has and she remains a crowd favorite for KCC patients.

Shalee grew up in St. Joe with family members who used cannabis to find relief from pain, which opened her to the flaws associated with the old stigma around weed. She first tried cannabis for herself on a camping trip with friends when they hotboxed a tent in the woods. Classic introduction story. After that, Shalee used it a couple more times recreationally but it was years later that her perspective on the plant evolved and it became a more central part of her life. While listening to Kings of Leon and smoking she realized how much cannabis helped provide relief from symptoms associated with ADHD. That’s where her medical journey began. Shalee started to pay attention to the varying effects of different strains. She noticed that indica leaning strains would level her out and help focus her thoughts. She associated the effects to a tunnel saying that she could “tunnel” her focus through hyperactivity. Shalee went on to explain that cannabis helps her be better at her job, living, and being a human.

When asked which brands were at the top of her categorical lists Shalee quickly went to Sinse flower for their consistent quality. She considers herself a flower girl and uses flower (preferably in a bong or bubbler) 95% of the time. Headchange tops her shopping list in the carts and dabs categories while edibles was a split tie between Dixie gummies and Honeybee chocolates.

Shalee’s years of personal experience coupled with her passion for cannabis and the effects it can have on people’s lives gives her all the right tools to provide the best dispensary experience in Missouri.

banana punch

Proper: Banana Soda Punch badder

“Banana Soda Punch, another Proper creation, is a flavorful badder that derives from a mix of three strains: Banana OG, Purple Punch, and Golden Goat. The consistency is smooth and slightly runny with a warm, golden yellow hue. Terpinolene is the dominant terpene, which is evidently displayed in the scent - sweet yet sharp pine with citrus undertones. The inhale has notes of berry and pine, while the terpinolene acts as an enhancer for the palette. The exhale, however, has a sweet and earthy profile reminiscent of Banana OG. Though all three strains are discernable in this piquant treat, Golden Goat is most heavily featured in scent, flavor, and effects. Mental stimulation is first to take place, an immediate uplift that radiates behind the eyes. A light state of relaxation follows afterward, thus helping with initiating tasks. Considering that the effects were mostly cerebral, Banana Soda Punch would be best suited for daytime use and mood regulation.” - Kassie Ferrero

Ask Dr. Feeze

Meet our resident Director of Health & Wellness, Cody Freeze, PharmD RPH. In this monthly feature, he will field your questions around cannabis and the interactions with the human body. To submit a question, please send to info@kccannabis.org with the subject line "Ask Dr. Freeze."

Q: How do I calculate the dose of THC or CBD in a certain amount of raw flower?

A: When cannabis flower batches are tested for potency, the number is generally expressed as a THC%, CBD%, or both. However, this does not tell you the dose of active THC or CBD in milligrams (mg) per weight of raw bulk flower. How much is actually absorbed? Some simple math can help. MATH TO THE RESCUE!

If a strain of raw flower is labeled at, say, 20% THC and 5% CBD, then you can take 0.2 for THC and 0.05 for CBD (0.2 is the decimal fraction of THC per gram of product) and multiply each by the source bulk weight. So, if you had 1 gram of raw bulk 20% THC and 5% CBD flower, it would have 0.2 grams of THC and 0.05 grams of CBD... which is 200 mg of THC and 50 mg of CBD per 1 gram of flower. That's before you do something wild, like heat it up or set it on fire.

The size of the average reservoir capacity for vaping or combusting dry flower varies, but is generally around 0.1 grams to 0.5 grams. Therefore, if your "bowl" size is 0.1 grams, you'd have around 20 mg THC and 5 mg CBD total.

You must also consider loss due to heat volatilization to environment and vehicle. Various inhalational methods will lose varying amounts of product to the vehicle and to the environment.

Bioavailability is defined as the proportion of a drug or other substance which enters the circulation when introduced into the body and so is able to have an active effect 100%, as each patient's technique and consumption methods can vary dramatically. If we continue to follow the above example, and account for a 30-50% loss during combustion, we see the effective dose delivered is 10 to 14 mg THC and 2.5 to 3.5 mg CBD.

Keep in mind, things like dry herb vaporizers and other consumption vehicles will also alter the quality and quantity of product consumed.
