How to survive the 24 hour Stomach Bug with Cannabis.

By: Hugo Ortiz

Unless you've had your head in the sand, you have likely heard or personally experienced people getting the 24 Hour Stomach Bug. As quick as a lightning strike, the bug infects and a timer starts leading to the moment your body begins the great purge. Soon the unfortunate host will begin evacuating anything and everything consumed recently. Often violent vomiting, diarrhea, fever, shivers, sweating, and many more symptoms. By the time you can get in to see a doctor, the virus has run its course. Right around the 24 hour mark, the clouds part and the sunshine peeks out of the storm, and you feel a ton better very quickly. You still don't trust your bowels, and you are probably dehydrated. sick getting med

Full preface here, I am not a doctor or other medical professional. My only qualifications I can provide is my experience with using cannabis to mitigate some symptoms of these 24 hour viruses.

After the purge your body goes through you will need rest. There are many factors that are trying to stop you at every turn. Are you too hot?? Take off some blankets only to find that you are actually super cold, put that blanket back on!! Nausea, and an unsettled stomach sets in. A couple of puffs from a joint, or vape cartridge will calm you down a bit, and ease that nausea. Hopefully you can drift back to sleep.

After a couple of hours you will need to start pounding liquids in order to rehydrate yourself. But the thought of drinking liquids or anything entering your mouth sounds like a horrible idea. After medicating again, the idea of drinking liquids is much more feasible, dry mouth is a real thing! Applesauce and toast can start to look pretty good after a joint or edible.

I'm not saying cannabis will stop the 24 hour bug in its tracks, I'm not claiming this is some cure all. What I am saying is that using cannabis during stomach related illnesses will turn that experience from a truly awful time, to a bearable time.

Over the past several months our Kearney location has become the home of the wonderful Whitney Taylor. Whitney was born in Rolla Missouri and raised on some land with horses, well water and natural springs down in Southeast MO. She is an avid nature lover and enjoys hiking and landscape photography. Whitney hopes to one day live a sustainable lifestyle on some land where she can put good intentions into the food she grows. She puts the same amount of intention into her day-to-day life and interactions with the people around her.

It is very obvious when interacting with Whitney that her biggest concern is listening to the person she is communicating with and improving the quality of their day. Before she was with KCC, Whitney had some experience in the service industry but spent most of her professional career working in the mental health field. The mental health field allowed her to use her natural traits to bring some joy and added support to people that needed it. She found a ton of fulfillment through her work but also brought home much of the burden that her patients and clients carried with them. This caused her to seek a new path that allowed her to achieve the same type of fulfillment. In 2016, Whitney rediscovered cannabis over a joint with a friend. That smoke session changed her life and opened her mind saying that she had never found that level of calmness before. From that point forward she dove into making cannabis a larger part of her lifestyle and a career. The next year she started the journey by moving to Washington in pursuit of a “greener” life. Over the next several years, Whitney lived in Washington, Oregon, and Colorado for various stints with cannabis being along for the ride, every step of the way. Though the journey was fun and, in her words, ‘worked out beautifully,’ she wasn’t able to find a job in the cannabis industry. Then, the state of Missouri changed its stance on cannabis and allowed her to pursue her passion in her home state.

Fast forward to now and Whitney has become a key member of the KCC Kearney team and has recently accepted the Assistant Manager position. When asked what she loves most about the cannabis industry and working at KCC, Whitney gave one of the best answers saying, “I’ve never quite worked anywhere that I got along with the people as much as I do here. I love being surrounded by so many like minded individuals with the same goal in mind. It’s my people.”

When asked about her go-to products, she immediately jumped to Gron gummies because of the wide variety of cannabinoid ratio options (CBD, CBN, CBG) available under their brand. As for flower, she is a big In The Flow fan because they are the only group she has met in Missouri that goes out of their way to speak about the good intentions they put into their grow. Whitney gets the most joy from introducing others to cannabis and seeing the positive effects she can have on their lives. After seeing the amazing things that cannabis did for her and others around her, Whitney has integrated cannabis into her lifestyle entirely. The next time you’re in Kearney, swing by KCC and let Whitney introduce you to the even brighter side of cannabis.

Proper Cannabis: Banana OG 3.5g flower

“Banana OG, a staple in the Proper Cannabis grow rotation, is better than ever in its most recent harvest! The flower is a lively shade of green accented with dark green sugar leaves and short orange hairs but the most enticing aspect of this flower is the blanket of trichomes that surrounds each bud. The scent and taste are paralleled, showcasing a gassy, rotten banana profile. Beta-Myrcene is the dominant terpene in this strain, which is made noticeable by the strong diesel notes on the inhale. The exhale, however, has a smooth, slight banana flavor that balances the gas profile wonderfully. A heavy sense of relaxation is first to appear, starting in the head and moving its way down the body and leaving one feeling a deep sense of relaxation. Due to its strong impact, it would be best to utilize this strain as part of a nighttime routine or for heightened pain relief.” - Kassie Ferrero

Cannabis and Sex: recent research supports the hypothesis that cannabis can improve sex

One of the most comprehensive studies examining the potential role of cannabis in improving sexual experiences was published in January of 2023 in the Journal of Cannabis Research. Long has it been proposed that cannabis can make sex more enjoyable, but few studies have offered strong data to support it.

Using over 800 participants from diverse backgrounds and using a modified version of the ‘Kaplan, Masters and Johnson’s sexual response cycle’, a defined metric of grading a sexual experience based on desire, excitement, orgasm, plateau, resolution, but to include satisfaction, researchers found strong positive correlations between the use of cannabis and sexual experience.

They found that over 70% of participants regardless of age or gender reported an increase in desire, orgasm intensity, 62.5% reported increased pleasure during masturbation, and over 70% reported an enhanced sense of taste and touch. They noted that this may be an avenue for treating sexual dysfunction, with particular interest in treating women.

Research such as this lends evidence for the use of specific cannabis products marked for their impact on sex, especially lubricants and topicals. There are even specific strains of cannabis named for their effects as an aphrodisiac. As the recreational market develops in the state of Missouri look for more of these products on the shelf of your favorite dispensary.
